Former President Donald Trump has called for the criminal prosecution of Google by the U.S. Justice Department (DOJ), accusing the tech giant of hiding positive news stories about him.
In a series of unhinged tweets Friday on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump claimed that Google is “rigged” against him and is suppressing his message.
“Google is hiding my positive news stories so that people will not find out the truth about me,” Trump tweeted. “This is a criminal act and the DOJ should immediately prosecute Google for this crime.”
Trump’s claims are unfounded. There is no evidence that Google is suppressing positive news stories about him. In fact, a recent study by the Pew Research Center found that Google News is more likely to show positive stories about Trump than negative ones.
Trump’s attacks on Google are part of a broader pattern of attacks on the media. He has repeatedly accused the media of being biased against him and of spreading “fake news.” These attacks are an attempt to discredit the media and to undermine trust in journalism.
The DOJ has not commented on Trump’s request for a criminal prosecution of Google. However, it is unlikely that the DOJ will take any action against Google, as there is no evidence of any wrongdoing.
Trump’s attacks on Google are a dangerous attack on the freedom of the press. The media plays a vital role in a democracy by providing information to the public and holding those in power accountable. Trump’s attempts to silence the media are an attack on our democracy.
