If you’re planning on moving to a new home, you may want to check out a new map from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) before you make your decision. The map reveals that a surprisingly large part of the country is at risk for landslides.
The map is based on data from the USGS’s National Landslide Hazards Program, which has been collecting data on landslides for more than 30 years. The program has identified more than 100,000 landslides in the United States, and the new map shows where these landslides are most likely to occur.
The map shows that the areas most at risk for landslides are the West Coast, Alaska, and Puerto Rico. However, there are also areas of high risk in the Midwest, the Southeast, and the Northeast.
If you live in an area that is at risk for landslides, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself and your property.
- Be aware of the signs of a landslide. These signs include cracks in the ground, moving soil or rocks, and changes in the water flow in streams or rivers.
- If you see any of these signs, evacuate the area immediately.
- Do not build or live in an area that is at risk for landslides.
- If you must live in an area that is at risk for landslides, take steps to protect your property. These steps include building retaining walls, planting trees and shrubs, and installing drainage systems.
Landslides can be a serious hazard, but by taking the proper precautions, you can protect yourself and your property.
