Calls for Ceasefire in Lebanon Grow as Fighting Intensifies

London, UK – Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has urged Israel and Hezbollah to “stop the violence” in his first speech to the UN General Assembly, as fighting between the two sides escalates in Lebanon.

Starmer said that the ongoing violence “is a threat to regional stability and a humanitarian catastrophe for the people of Lebanon”. He called on all parties to “step back from the brink” and work towards a ceasefire.

The Prime Minister’s call for a ceasefire comes as the death toll from the fighting continues to rise. According to the Lebanese Red Cross, at least 100 people have been killed, including 13 children.

The fighting began on August 10th, after Hezbollah fired rockets into Israel. Israel responded with airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.

The escalation in fighting has raised fears of a wider conflict in the region. The United States and other world powers have called for a ceasefire, but so far their calls have been ignored.

The United Nations Security Council is due to meet on Thursday to discuss the situation in Lebanon.
