Alcon Entertainment, the production company behind the acclaimed science-fiction film “Blade Runner 2049,” has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk, over their recent “AI Day” event.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in California, alleges that Tesla’s “AI Day” event, held on August 19, 2021, featured unauthorized use of copyrighted material from “Blade Runner 2049.” Specifically, Alcon claims that Tesla used clips from the film without permission, including a scene featuring the iconic “Blade Runner” character Rick Deckard (played by Harrison Ford).
In its complaint, Alcon argues that Tesla’s use of the “Blade Runner 2049” material was “willful and deliberate,” and that Tesla knew or should have known that it did not have the rights to use the material. Alcon is seeking damages, an injunction against Tesla from further using the material, and other relief.
Tesla has not yet publicly commented on the lawsuit. However, the company has a history of being sued for copyright infringement. In 2019, Tesla was sued by the band Radiohead for using their song “Creep” in a commercial without permission. Tesla eventually settled the lawsuit by agreeing to pay Radiohead a licensing fee.
The Alcon lawsuit is a reminder that copyright infringement is a serious issue, and that companies must be careful not to use copyrighted material without permission. It is also a sign that Hollywood studios are increasingly willing to take legal action to protect their intellectual property.
